Salt for Health

Humans need a certain amount of salt every day; it is an essential mineral for life and it plays a major role in our metabolism. Our bodies require between 5 and 10 grams of salt a day. Unlike other chemicals that the body requires, salt cannot be produced by our bodies.
Salt is needed in order to help muscles and nerves work and to regulate blood pressure. It is used as an electrolyte which is a solution that can carries electrical charges. Electrolytes exist in the blood as acids, bases, and salts.
Hormones help the body regulate how much salt and water is needed. If the body has too much salt, the excess sodium chloride is excreted. If the body has too little salt water is excreted in order to preserve the salt-water balance. If the human body goes for a long period of time without enough salt it will desiccate and die.

Uses of salt in human health:

Anti-bacterial
Salt has powerful anti-bacterial properties, and it is an effective antiseptic. A salt solution can be used as an antiseptic for a cut - as first aid - if you don’t have anything else on hand. It would create a hypertonic solution and literally exhaust all the microbes that are in the cut.
Salt is being used as support treatment for skin diseases due to its anti-inflammatory properties; patients suffering from rheumatic conditions often experience relief from joint pain when soaking in a salt bath.
Salt-baths are frequently used to treat psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, chronic eczema as well as arthritis.
Chronically inflamed skin is being treated with salt from the Dead Sea and also with table salt.
Salt works well on dandruff, reduces inflammation, itching and pain, and helps regenerate the skin.

Relieve bee sting pain
After being stung by a bee, dampen the area immediately and apply a small pile of salt to reduce pain and swelling.

Treat mosquito bites
A saltwater soak can do wonders for mosquito bites.
A paste made with a mixture or salt and olive oil can help too.
Rub some vinegar to relieve the itching, or try a little bit of wet salt.

Treat poison ivy
Same method as for treating mosquito bites.

Heat Packs
Packs made with heated salt are often used to relieve pain and swelling.
Hot salt water compresses can be used to reduce infection and inflammation.
